Research Interests

My lab seeks to identify the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of alcohol dependence and stress disorders. We work to understand the neuropharmacology of drug reinforcement in the drug-dependent organism, and we are also interested in examining the neurobiological mechanisms of co-dependence on more than one drug. To answer these questions, we use techniques that include operant drug self-administration, acoustic startle reflex, tests of pain and mechanosensitivity, tests of anxiety-like behavior and locomotor activity, alcohol and nicotine vapor inhalation for induction of physical dependence, behavioral pharmacology, immunohistochemistry, and Western blots.

About Me

I completed my undergraduate training in Psychology at University of Texas at Austin, and my Ph.D. in Psychobiology at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. During my graduate training, I worked with genetic models of susceptibility to alcoholism.I went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in the labs of Drs. George Koob and Marisa Roberto at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, where we used behavioral pharmacology & electrophysiology techniques to explore neural and behavioral dysregulation associated with alcohol dependence.I remain very interested in questions of addiction, and I am especially interested in understanding why and how alcohol addiction is co-morbid with addiction to other drugs and other psychiatric conditions. I am also interested in questions related to subpopulations of addicts and individual differences in propensity to consume alcohol and drugs.

Outside the lab, I am an avid runner, traveler & Longhorns sports fan.
