About Me

I have been fortunate to enjoy a distinguished career as a Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM). Currently, I serve as the Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences. During my 25 years as a faculty member at UMMSM, I have made significant contributions to preventing drug use, sexual risk behaviors, and related problem behaviors in Hispanic adolescents through family-based interventions. During my career at the University of Miami, I have served as Principal Investigator, Co Principal Investigator, or Investigator of several grants funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, & Kidney Diseases, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Research Statement

Throughout my career, I have been committed to advancing clinical knowledge in the service of enhancing the quality of prevention intervention implementation and research locally and nationally. More importantly, I have led the development, evaluation, and dissemination of  the efficacy and effectiveness of Familias Unidas, a Hispanic-specific, family-based, parent-centered preventive intervention designed to prevent conduct disorders, illicit drug use, alcohol use, cigarette use, and sexual risk behaviors by improving family functioning.
