About Me

Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D. is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He is a native of Cuba and with degrees from the University of Miami (B.A. and M.D.). He trained in primary care general internal medicine at UCSF, and completed a research fellowship in general internal medicine before being appointed Assistant Professor at UCSF in July 1983. He practices continuity general internal medicine and teaches residents and students in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Pérez-Stable's research has focused on health and health care disparities by race and ethnicity in the areas of tobacco use and cessation, cancer prevention and minority aging. He has special expertise in development of risk factor reduction interventions for Latinos and has collaborated with social scientists and epidemiologists throughout his career. He is the Director of the UCSF Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations (MERC), Director of the Center for Aging in Diverse Communities, which is funded through a NIH/National Institute of Aging grant through 2017, and Assistant Director for Health Care Disparities of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center.. Dr. Pérez-Stable is a member of the National Advisory Council, National Institute on Aging, NIH (2011-2015) and was elected to the Institute of medicine in 2001.
