Leadership and Gender Training for Women in the Health Sciences in Latin America: Taking Stock of Lessons Learned from a Pilot Program and Ways Forward

Drs. Nora Volkow, Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Sharon Hrynkow, Associate Director, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and Roger Glass, Director, Fogarty International Center, hosted a meeting focused on increasing the number of women in science in leadership positions. The meeting, held at the Lawton Chiles International House (“Stone House”) on the NIH campus, included two formal presentations followed by active participant* discussions about the current state of affairs of women in science.
Gloria Bonder, Director, Institute of Gender Studies, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (Argentina), presented an overview of a two-year mentoring and leadership pilot program in the PowerPoint presentation titled, “Virtual Training Program for Women in Science in Latin America: Lessons Learned.” The development of special modules for women working in specific thematic areas, with AIDS as a first area of focus was discussed. To this end, Dr. Gail Shor-Posner, Director of AIDS International Training and Research Program, University of Miami presented “AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean: Perspectives on Needs and Capacity Building” to emphasize the existing infrastructure, challenges and opportunities.
The NHSN has become partners in the leadership of this initiative through the active participation of Dr. Ana Mari Cauce, NHSN Steering Committee member and NHSN Chair of the Mentoring and Training Subcommittee. The NHSN will continue to be a dynamic partner in this initiative as other NHSN Steering members including Dr. José Szapocznik, Chair, and Dr. Patricia Molina, Vice Chair have contributed to the above meeting and are exploring future options with current and future partners.
