Note from the Editor

Feliz Año Nuevo y Bem Vindos!

I am proud to present the fifth edition of El Faro: La Voz de la Red.  While 2009 brings many challenges it also brings hope that our new President Barack Obama will increase support for scientific research and foster stronger relationships between the United States and the international community. Our world has become a globalized village in which the need for international communication and collaboration will continue to increase. Thus it is in the spirit of globalization that the fifth edition of El Faro explores the thoughts, experiences, successes, and hopes of the NHSN membership on the international front.

I would like to introduce our newest contributing editor, Dr. Carlos F. Ríos-Bedoya. During the 2008 conference, SRTI fellows agreed that it would be best to incorporate their newsletter Adelante into El Faro. Thus, Dr. Ríos-Bedoya has agreed to serve as the editor of the SRTI Corner in El Faro during 2009. Welcome Carlos and it is a great pleasure to work with you!

We open our newsletter with a featured article by Dr. Flavio Marsiglia comparing drug use attitudes and behaviors between Latino immigrants and native Spaniards in Spain. The Career Diva section follows with Jim Anthony providing tips on how to navigate the challenging process of engaging in fruitful and equitable international research collaborations. Then we learn in the First Person Column about how I left Brazil to pursue my career in the United States. Next, Steve Gust tells us about international collaborations and strategies to secure federal funding for international projects in the International Front. Then, Carlos introduces the new SRTI Corner with a special international twist! Dr. Nelson Tiburcio follows with important updates for early career members. Next we introduce Dr. Eduardo Romano, one of our most recent recruits in the New Member Interview section! Finally, we conclude the fifth edition with our most recent accomplishments.

During the 2008 conference, the 3-C Institute for Social Development conducted several interviews with NHSN members to document their experiences, ideas, and suggestions about substance abuse research.  Topics included career development, conducting research with Latinos, funding, strategies in developing collaborations, and more.  Conference panels and presentations were also videotaped.  All of these materials are available at the NHSN website.  I encourage you to check it out! Just CLICK HERE

I would like to thank all of you who have responded to our calls for submissions, and especially those who have contributed to the current issue of El Faro. Our newsletter depends on your willingness to take the time to contribute, so thank you for making it a success! In conclusion, I would like to encourage the membership to continue to participate and submit your contributions to the newsletter. After all, El Faro is your voice!

Les deseo mucho exito en este nuevo año!!!!

Obrigada!

Lili
