Early Career Leadership

by Dr. Nelson Tiburcio

Hi all,

Nelson J. Tiburcio, Ph.D.I hope the Spring semester has been fulfilling for student and professor alike. For those of you also involved in the research arena, you are well aware of how much movement has been generated recently in wake of President Obama's Stimulus Package. These are interesting times, and our hope is that regardless of position, location, discipline or expertise, your immediate and long term goals are geared towards fruition.

The NHSN as a whole is experiencing many of these changes and the National Steering Committee and senior leadership are making great strides in providing significant platforms for the Early Career folks to have a voice in all Network related functions.

In May we held the first of our ECLC Mentoring Initiative presentations. Dr. Liliane Windsor presented and received feedback from Steering Committee member, Dr. Hortensia Amaro, and fellow ECLC members. This marked an excellent beginning for this initiative going forward; one that we can surely expand and build upon in the future. Plans include inviting multiple senior investigators, fostering collaborations among members and eventually opening the forum to invite all members wishing to participate. We will keep you posted on the ongoing development of this mentoring initiative.

It also gives me great pleasure to inform you all that as in prior years, the ECLC is very well represented at the Ninth Annual International Conference in Miami, Florida. Our very own Drs. Laura O'Dell and Vicky Ojeda are Co-Chairs this year. In addition, the New Investigator Panel (year after year, one of the highlights of our annual conferences) will be chaired by Drs. Mildred Maldonado-Molina, Laura O'Dell, and Liliane Windsor (our editor of El Faro). As the conference grows nearer and the submission deadlines are announced, I encourage you all to submit your best presentations, posters and ongoing work for dissemination. It has always been my experience that being selected to present in the New Investigator Panel is fulfilling as presenters receive feedback on developing the presentation and on their dissemination skills.  In addition it provides a great opportunity to engage in what the Network is all about:  Excellence in research, Networking, Representacion, y Amistad at its finest. So get on board….

I wish you all continued success in your ongoing work.

Paz, salud y suerte,

Nelson
