"Environmental Factors in HIV Transmission among Suburban IDUs" - 3R01DA023408-03S1

Dr. Robert Peralta, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Akron, received acceptance for publication for four manuscripts.

The first manuscript titled “At the Intersection of Interpersonal Violence, Masculinity, and Alcohol Use: The Experiences of Heterosexual Male Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence” has been accepted at the journal Violence Against Women.  The paper uses qualitative methodologies to discern the impact of marginalization on alcohol-related interpersonal and intimate partner violence among a sample of convicted domestic violence batterers.

The second manuscript titled  “Non-Medical Prescription Drug Use among U.S. College Students at a Midwest University: A Partial Test of Social Learning Theory” uses survey data to establish the effects of social learning on initiation of non-medical prescription drug abuse among a sample of college students.  This piece has been accepted for publication at the journal Substance Use and Misuse.

The third manuscript titled “Race, Abstinence, and Non Binge Drinking: A Study of Drinking Styles among College Students” uses survey data on alcohol and other drug use among college students to examine the structuring effects of racism on alcohol use among African American students.  This piece has been accepted for publication at the Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse.

Finally, the fourth manuscript, titled Understanding the Complexity of Alcohol-Related Intimate Partner Violence n the Lives Of Hispanic Men Who Have Sex With Men: Methodological Issues and Considerations has been accepted for publication at Gender Issues.  This piece is concerned with the critical and methodological issues pertaining to the intersectionality of ethnicity, alcohol use, HIV risk, and intimate partner violence among men who have sex with men.
