Dr. Wilson R. Palacios awarded a diversity research supplement
Dr. Wilson R. Palacios, Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of South Florida, along with Yale University has been awarded a diversity research supplement from NIDA on the influence of environment on HIV risk and transmission among suburban injection drug users.
Dr. Nelson Jose Tiburcio receives the Early Career Investigator Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence
Dr. Nelson Jose Tiburcio, Chair of the Early Career Leadership Committee and Co-Investigator of the NIDA funded Disruption and Reformulation of Illicit Drug Markets among New Orleans Evacuees study at the Institute for Special Populations Research at NDRI in New York (Dr. Eloise E. Dunlap, PI), received the Early Career Investigator Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. At this year’s CPDD meeting in Reno, Dr. Tiburcio will be presenting his research on sustained abstinence from heroin use, specifically a review of the various ways that self reported coping strategies and techniques serve as tools in effectively establishing sustained Recovery Networks among this population.
Dr.Mildred Maldonado-Molina receives SPR Award
Mildred Maldonado-Molina, a member of the NHSN Early Career Leadership Committee, received the 2009 Early Career Preventionist Network award for outstanding young investigator at the Society for Prevention Research. Dr. Maldonado-Molina is Assistant Professor at the University of Florida, College of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Health Policy Research and faculty member of the Institute for Child Health Policy.
Dr. José Szapocznik, NHSN Chair appointed to the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities at NIH
This is Dr. Szapocznik's fifth appointment to a National Advisory Council. Previous appointments include: National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse, NIDA/ NIH (2000-2004), National Advisory Mental Health Council, NIMH/NIH (1995-1998) Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council, Ex Officio Member representing NIMH, National Institutes of Health (1995-1998) National Advisory Council, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (1998-2000) Charter member and only behavioral scientist, NIH AIDS Program Advisory Committee (precursor to the NIH Office of AIDS Council).
Member Laura E. O'Dell, Ph.D. receives the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (PECASE) for 2007
Congratulations to NHSN member Laura E. O'Dell, Ph.D., from the University of Texas at El Paso, Department of Psychology, on being selected to receive the PECASE award - the highest award that the nation offers to scientists in the early stage of their careers. Steffanie Strathdee, Ph.D. appointed first Associate Dean for Global Health Sciences for UC San Diego's Health Sciences.
Dr. Steffanie Strathdee , who holds the Harold Simon Chair, is Chief of the Division of International Health and Professor in the Department of Medicine. She is also Co-Director of the UC San Diego-San Diego State University joint doctoral degree program in global health and Co-Director of the International Core of the UCSD Center for AIDS Research.
